GM Confirms: The Next Cadillac CT5 Will Remain Gas-Powered
General Motors has announced plans to build a next-generation Cadillac CT5, confirming that the luxury sedan will continue with an internal combustion engine rather than transitioning to an electric powertrain as some had speculated. Production will take place in the United States, though GM has not yet revealed whether the new CT5 will retain its rear-wheel-drive layout or if a V-Series performance model is in development. The automaker did confirm that the current-generation CT5 will remain in production through 2026, suggesting the redesigned model will arrive for the 2027 model year.
What was once speculated to become an EV-powered sedan, the CT5 will continue as a gas-powered Cadillac.
A Strategic Shift from Cadillac and GMIn a public statement, Global Cadillac VP John Roth stated “As Cadillac evolves, we will continue to make necessary adjustments to our portfolio to meet customer demand. We are thrilled to confirm that the legacy of the CT5 will continue with a next-generation ICE vehicle, proudly manufactured at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly plant, of U.S. and globally sourced parts.”
GM announced earlier this year that after the current CT4 and CT5 production ended, there would be no replacement Blackwing high-performance models. Also, production of the current Cadillac CT5 takes place at the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan that GM slated for a 1.25 billion-dollar investment plan to convert to EV production. But it seems GM may be backpedaling a little on the big EV plans and are hearing buyers lasting interests in gasoline-powered sedans.
GM has yet to confirm if the next CT5 will be rear-wheel-drive or offer a manual transmission.
Continued Refinement for the Modern Sports SedanThe Cadillac CT5 was refreshed for the 2025 model year, debuting several notable updates in design and technology. These included revised front-end styling, an expanded suite of standard safety features, and a larger infotainment display. Under the skin, the current CT5 rides on the GM Alpha 2 platform and offers the 237 horsepower turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder, a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, a 360 horsepower version of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 for the CT5-V, and the high-performance CT5-V Blackwing with the supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 pumping out 668 horsepower.
No word yet on the possibility of a future performance CT5, but we can dream of Cadillac keeping the LT4 alive, right?

Devastating Fire Ravages GM Advanced Design Studio
Late Wednesday night, a devastating fire broke out at the GM Advanced Design California Studio in Pasadena, a state-of-the-art facility that opened almost a year ago to lead the automaker’s future design initiatives. The blaze, described by local officials as one of the largest structure fires the city has seen in recent years, reportedly destroyed a concept car vehicle under development by General Motors’ design team.

Fire crews responded quickly but faced significant challenges due to the presence of lithium-ion batteries inside the facility from electric and hybrid prototype vehicles. These batteries can ignite in unpredictable ways, releasing toxic fumes and reigniting even after flames are extinguished. Hazardous materials teams were dispatched to manage the chemical hazards as thick smoke poured from the building late into the night.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the effort to contain the fire, but there have been no reported injuries among GM employees. Investigators have yet to determine an official cause, and it remains unclear whether the lithium-ion batteries contributed to the start or spread of the fire.

The Pasadena-based GM Advanced Design Studio was envisioned as a creative hub for next-generation mobility concepts, collaborating with GM’s global design centers in Michigan, the UK, and China. The facility was designed to foster innovative thinking and rapid prototyping, taking advantage of Southern California’s strong automotive culture and early adoption of emerging technologies.

UPDATE: A GM spokesperson has since released the following statement: “We’re grateful that all employees and first responders are safe and accounted for. The isolated fire was contained to a single design concept vehicle and did not spread to any other vehicles, design concepts, or the building itself. We thank the responding fire departments for their swift action in extinguishing the fire.”
